Attics are often the area of the home that is going to have the most impact on a home’s comfort. The recommendation for our climate zone in the Denver metro area is R60 and we often find that home’s in the Denver metro area are either under insulated or lack air sealing or a combination of the two, which allows conditioned air to escape the home. In order to expose all air leakage points in the attic and achieve the most impact thorough air sealing, we recommend a full insulation extraction and application of 1 part spray foam at all air leakage points. The most common air leakage points are wall top plates, electric penetrations and plumbing penetrations but every home is unique and we evaluate each home individually. After air sealing we will insulate any other structures in your attic such as knee walls, solar tubes or skylights and add b-vent treatment to any heat sources in the attic such as water heater or furnace flues and lastly blow in loose fill insulation to bring your attic to an insulation value of R60.
BENEFITS TO ATTIC INSULATION:
- The comfort of your home! With a properly insulated attic the conditioned air in your home, whether it be cool air in the summer or warm air in the winter, stays in the living space of your home – exactly where you want it!
- Saving on heating and cooling costs! If the conditioned air in your home doesn’t have penetrations to escape into your attic and your attic is properly insulated your furnace and air conditioning or heat pump don’t have to be running constantly to replace the air that escapes into the attic
- Improved indoor air quality! Once your attic is properly air sealed and insulated it not only prevents outdoor air from entering your home, it also prevents attic air from permeating into the living space.
TYPES OF INSULATION FOR ATTICS:
- Loose fill (blown in) insulation: We can apply either cellulose or fiberglass insulation in your attic. Both insulations are great options! Cellulose insulation is a recycled paper material that is then treated with boric acid for fire resistance. Since cellulose insulation is a more dense material than fiberglass it has a better resistance to airflow which also allows it to have a higher R value per inch. Cellulose insulation has an approximate R value of R3.5 per inch so it will require a lower overall depth to achieve the recommended R60 for attic insulation. Loose fill fiberglass insulation is composed of molten glass that is spun or blown into fibers. Fiberglass insulation is fire retardant and can be very effective in keeping your home at a comfortable temperature regardless of the outdoor temperature. Since fiberglass insulation is a more fluffy material it has a lower R value per inch but still provides great insulation value if the correct amount is applied. Fiberglass has an approximate R value of R2.5 per inch and requires approximately 20” to achieve the recommended R value of R60 for our climate zone.
- Closed cell 2 part spray foam insulation: We can apply closed cell 2-part spray foam insulation on the roof deck of your home. This is a great option if you’re interested in creating a conditioned attic and adding additional living space in your attic or if you’re interested in having the most superior type of insulation in your attic. 2-part spray foam is a more expensive option but it not only provides insulation value, it also air seals any area that it is applied to and is the best insulation available on today’s insulation market.
